OnlyRoses City Spotlight: Quito

August 1st 2017

Every one of our roses comes from Ecuador. Specifically from the area around the capital city of Quito, where they grow in rich volcanic soil, 4000 metres above sea level.

Needless to say, we’ve spent quite a bit of time in Quito, a very special place that lives up to its reputation as one of South America’s most beautiful cities. Here are our top tips on where to stay, eat and shop.

Intro

Pim’s Panecillo

Delicious local food and a stunning view. You’ll find both at Pim’s Panecillo. Try the Giant llapingacho (a massive potato patty with cheese, diced, meat and avocado). There’s something on the menu for everyone, but the view alone is worth it. And make sure you book a table, as it can get busy.

Plaza Foch

This is where locals, travellers and revellers convene pretty much every night. Perhaps the busiest spot in the city, Plaza Foch is South America’s entertainment capital and it’s the place to go to eat, drink and dance the night away.

Eat

Otavalo

About an hour’s drive from Quito, Otavalo Market (arguably South America’s most famous) is where to go for locally made crafts, tapestries, and souvenirs. Tip: Saturday is the market’s busiest day, so you might want to pick another time to visit.

El Quicentro Shopping

If you’re in the mood to shop (and you want it all in one place), head to this modern shopping mall. There’s everything from beautiful handicrafts to clothing by designer brands.

Shop

Casa Gangotena

This exquisitely restored historic mansion, once belonging to the prominent Gangotena family, is elegant, grand and intimate all at once. It’s got all the amenities you could want for a luxurious stay, plus an enviable location, right in the city centre, overlooking Plaza San Francisco.

Hotel Plaza Grande

The city’s first luxury hotel, the Plaza Grande offers 15 colonial-style and beautifully-appointed suites, a relaxing spa, attentive staff, and delightful old world charm (with little added touches like an ink fountain pen in the room for writing notes. Love).
